Rubio's Early Strike Holds Up For Lakers In CCAC Opener

Box Score

ELGIN, Ill. – Alan Rubio's sixth-minute goal was enough to lift Roosevelt to a 1-0 win over Judson in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday in Elgin.

The Eagles actually created the first chance of the match with a corner kick two minutes in, but Eric Carvajal was up to the task on the shot off the set piece. It didn't take long for the Lakers (2-3-1, 1-0-0 CCAC) to charge up the other way and draw a penalty kick just 5:56 into the match. Rubio confidently sent his shot past the goalie to give Roosevelt an early lead, and from there, it was a fairly even slog for both teams.

Roosevelt held a small 11-9 edge in shot attempts with six of those reaching the goal for the Lakers. Carvajal stopped all three of Judson's attempts that made it on target for his first shutout of the season. Both teams also finished with three corner kicks each.

The Lakers came out on the attack in the second half by winning a corner kick just three minutes into the period and forcing a save out of Judson's keeper. Although Judson had seven shots in the second half just one actually was on target for Carvajal to make a save. Meanwhile while Roosevelt forced five saves from the Eagles on its seven attempts in the second half, including a pair of clearances credited to the defense.

The Lakers continue CCAC play next Saturday at home when they host Holy Cross at Morris Field in Arlington Heights at 2:30 p.m.
