Box Score CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball team continued its CCAC homestand at the Goodman Center on Thursday, October 6, taking on the Olivet Nazarene Tigers.
After falling behind early 1-3, the Lakers found their groove on offense, scoring seven of the next nine points to gain an 8-5 advantage. Roosevelt was able to maintain their edge throughout the majority of the set, going up by as many as five points at 20-15. Fresh off a career high nine kills, freshman Brooke Williams, paced RU with two kills and a block. With the Tigers creeping back to within two, Viktoria Marysheva and Alyssa Stilley combined for a monster block to give the Lakers a 24-21 lead and an eventual 25-23 set win.
Set two started in similar fashion, with the Lakers falling behind 3-5 before storming back to take a 7-6 lead and forcing an ONU timeout. Out of the break, Viktoria Marysheva picked up where she left off last match, nabbing her second kill of the evening. Despite the strong start, Roosevelt let the set slip away, falling behind 11-18. With their backs against the wall, the Lakers began to climb back behind a pair of Marysheva kills and a pair of blocks from Jessa Henry and Marysheva. The comeback effort was not enough as the Tigers tied the match at one set each.
Looking to swing the match in their favor, RU came out ready in the third, scoring the first point of the set. Roosevelt slipped behind 9-13, before scoring four straight points to tie the set at 13 apiece. The teams battled back and forth throughout the set, but with Roosevelt down 19-20, ONU was able to pull away for a 25-20 set win.
Down two sets to one, the Lakers pushed the offensive going up early, 6-2, on a kill from Henry and a service ace from Catarina Calabrese. RU would continue to grow its lead to five at 11-6 on a Marysheva ace. Another Jessa Henry kill kept the Lakers lead steady at 14-9 and led to an ONU timeout. Holding that same lead late in the set, the Lakers were able to stall a comeback attempt with a big kill from Brooke Williams, to keep the score 24-21. Roosevelt forced a fifth and final set with a 25-22 set victory.
The deciding set began strong for the Lakers as they scored the first three points of the final frame. That early advantage turned out to be the difference for the Lakers. With the lead still three at 10-7, Viktoria Marysheva came up big with a kill and ace on back-to-back possessions. Roosevelt would eventually put the match away on a Stilley kill to win the set 15-13.
