Lakers Suffer Overtime Setback In Opener At Aquinas

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Ayo Ajiboye hit the game-tying free-throw with six seconds left, but the Roosevelt Lakers were unable to rally in overtime Saturday and fell 81-74 to Aquinas College in non-conference action.

Roosevelt (0-1) led for most of the action after scoring the game's first points and didn't actually trail until the final 20 seconds of regulation. After the Lakers stretched their lead to as many as 15 points in the middle of the second half, Aquinas began to chip away at the advantage. The Saints outscored the Lakers 24-9 over the final 9:18 of regulation to force overtime, though Roosevelt had a few chances to win in the final minute.

Ajiboye stepped to the line with six seconds remaining and his team down one and missed the front end of his two free throws. However, he found the resolve to sink the second attempt, arguably the most important of his 16 points in the game. Ajiboye was one of four Roosevelt players who finished in double figures, all of which were led by Chima Nwosu's 17 points off the bench.

After giving up the lead with 19 seconds left, the Lakers never led again and they made just two of their eight field goals in overtime. Meanwhile, Aquinas was an efficient 3 of 5 in the extra period, including knocking down both of its 3-pointers. The Saints also made five of their six free throws in overtime to extend the lead in the closing seconds.

In Dee Brown's first game as the Lakers' head coach, his team came out firing to take the early lead and keep Aquinas on its toes. Roosevelt made half of its shots in the first half to take a 33-29 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the Lakers continued their offensive success by making 8 of 17 from the field to extend the lead out to 59-44 with 9:18 remaining in regulation.

However, over the final nine minutes, the Lakers made just 2 of 8 shots and missed half of their 10 free throws. Over that same stretch, Aquinas committed just one turnover and made 10 of 18 shots to force overtime after shooting just 36 percent from the floor in the first 31 minutes of the game.

Yuri Swinford scored 15 points and led the team with 10 rebounds in his debut for Roosevelt, and Lucas Jordan added 14 points as well for the Lakers. Despite the cold shooting at the end, the Lakers still shot 41.7 percent in the game, though they made just five of their 26 attempts from long range.

Roosevelt returns to action Wednesday on the road when it opens Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Calumet St. Joseph with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
