Box Score

WHITING, Ind. – The Roosevelt Lakers won for the third time in five matches with a sweep of conference foe Calumet St. Joseph on Tuesday night in Whiting, Ind. With the win, the Lakers kept their hopes of postseason play alive by moving to 5-8 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 6-17 overall on the year.

Roosevelt eased into the match by dropping five of the first six points in the opening set, but quickly won seven of the next eight points to take control of the first set. The exclamation point came on a dominant 11-1 run in the middle of the set in which the Lakers forced Calumet to use both of its timeouts to take a commanding 20-9 lead. Even though the teams traded points the remainder of the set, Roosevelt still won the opener 25-15 behind a .231 hitting percentage.

There wasn't any rust to start the second set as the Lakers blasted out to a 7-2 lead before the Crimson Wave used a timeout. Calumet came back with a strong run of its own and eventually took an 18-16 lead in the second set. However, Roosevelt was undeterred and won the next five points to grab a stranglehold on the set and win it 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match, once again hitting .231 in the set.

Calumet struck back early in the third set with a run to push out its advantage to 12-8. Yet Roosevelt scored the next six points on the match to take a lead in the set that it would never relinquish, holding on for a 25-22 win in the final set. Ja'Nya Wilkes' only kill of the match was the decisive blow for the Lakers, who move to within a game of the final spot in the CCAC tournament with four matches to go.

Logan Cofield and Viktoria Marysheva paced Roosevelt with six kills each in the win. Jessa Henry and Zoe Hutchinson each added 10 assists for the Lakers while Marysheva scooped up a team-best 14 kills in the match.

Roosevelt completes its four-game road trip through the CCAC on Thursday evening in Milwaukee, Wis. against Cardinal Stritch.
