Women's Basketball Upended By Calumet St. Joseph's Late Run

WHITING, Ind. – Ashley Smoldt led all scorers with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, but host Calumet St. Joseph scored the final 10 points of Saturday's game against the Roosevelt women's basketball team to pick up a 61-54 decision at the Rittenmeyer Center.

JayShari Chears added 12 points, MicQuasha Riddle handed out five assists in tandem with seven rebounds of her own, and Jordan Fierst added nine points on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor to complement her five boards for the shorthanded Lakers (2-10, 1-6 CCAC), who had seven players see action.

Smoldt played nearly every minute of the game in an ironwoman display. The junior added five steals to her all-around effort.

Shakeana Clark had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Crimson Wave (2-10, 1-6 CCAC).

Roosevelt scored the game's first seven points and led 11-2 before CCSJ started to get hot from the field and turned around its fortunes to take a four-point lead into the second quarter.

From there the two teams engaged in a closely-contested defensive battle, as shooting percentages went down and turnovers went up. Each team caused 20-plus takeaways on this afternoon.

After more back-and-forth exchanges of the lead, Roosevelt eventually took a 54-51 lead after Erionna Moore split a pair of free throws with 2:28 left in regulation.

But that is when Calumet St. Joseph went on its decisive 10-0 run, as the Crimson Wave were able to claim the lead and Roosevelt could not buy a bucket in the final two minutes.

The Lakers return home to host Lincoln College in a rematch of Roosevelt's season-opening loss in Lincoln. The return game takes place at the Goodman Center on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
