Volleyball Edged By Olivet Nazarene In Wild Five-Set Affair

CHICAGO - The Roosevelt volleyball team hosted Olivet Nazarene on Thursday, and in a thirlling back-and-forth CCAC contest, the Lakers were edged out by the Tigers in the fifth set by a final score of 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 17-15 inside the Goodman Center.

Makenzie Cooper led Roosevelt (6-14, 1-7 CCAC) with 16 kills to go with 18 digs and seven block assists.

Amy Stumpf added 13 kills, Kara Sleeper and Daphyne Turner combined for 11 blocks, Mallory Nickelson aided with 37 assists and 13 digs, and Paula Gross posted 26 digs.

Kassidy Heeringa led ONU (9-9, 6-2 CCAC) with 18 kills.

No lead was safe in this match, as momentum swung back and forth like a frantic pendulum.

Roosevelt captured the first and third sets behind .200-plus hitting, and ONU had the same clip success in its set wins.

The Lakers led at the halfway point of the fifth set, but the Tigers made it a battle. Stump had a kill to give RU match point, but ONU rattled off two straight to reverse its fortunes.

The set was eventually tied 15-15 when Sutton Bate had a kill for the Tigers, and a subsequent service ace gave the guests a victory in a wild, nerve-fraying bout.

Roosevelt heads to Van Dixhorn Arena (Deerfield, Ill) to face Trinity International University on Saturday, October 5 at 12 p.m.
