Box Score BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Oscar Gaytan's go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute and Anibal Mendoza's 72nd-minute penalty kick proved enough to outlast Mother Nature and visiting St. Ambrose in an abbreviated 2-0 result for the Lakers at Toyota Park on Tuesday.
Mario Graciano made three stops for the clean sheet as the Lakers (3-6-0, 2-1-0 CCAC) held off the Fighting Bees (3-5-1, 1-2-0 CCAC) before severe thunderstorms, lightning and darkness forced a halt and subsequent early end to the match with 12:49 left in regulation.
Roosevelt controlled possession for much of the match, particularly in the second half.
Gaytan put the Lakers on the board as halftime neared when he moved to his right and hit paydirt with an unimpeded look at the right corner for his first goal of the season.
The match stayed that way until St. Ambrose keeper Eric Roche was carded for a takedown in the box as Roosevelt posed a severe threat to score an insurance goal. Mendoza made sure that that goal eventually got put on the board by beating Roche with a PK for his fourth tally of the fall.
Strong winds, lightning strikes and an eventual downpour forced a clearing of the pitched, and after the teams waited it out, the referees called the contest early.
Roosevelt hosts Calumet St. Joseph on Friday at Toyota Park beginning at 1 p.m.
