Men's Soccer Felled In 2OT By Bethel, 2-1

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Oscar Gaytan scored his first goal of 2017 to put the Roosevelt men's soccer team ahead in the middle of the first half, but visiting Bethel (Ind.) scored the equalizer with 38 seconds left in the opening period and netted the game-winning tally 51 seconds in the second overtime session to upend the Lakers, 2-1, at Toyota Park on Labor Day.

Jesus Velasco made seven saves for the Lakers (1-3-0), who played a day game on a warm afternoon in Chicago's south suburbs less than two days after a road evening match at Goshen (Ind.).

Gaytan struck in the 21st minute after corralling a ball from Jose Garcia to go toward net and finish for the match's inaugural strike.

The game stayed in Roosevelt's favor on the scoreboard, but the Pilots (4-1-0) pushed ahead and eventually hit pay dirt in the waning moments of the first period. A left-side service into the box and another quick flick of a pass allowed Bruno Jaeger a clean look at frame to beat Velasco and knot the contest.

The affair remain deadlocked amidst spirited play until the first minute of the second OT. That's when a ball sent toward the box found Lucas Moreira, who was able to graze the man marking and send in curving ball that went over Velasco for the golden goal.

Roosevelt plays at NCAA Division III North Park on Chicago's northwest side on Saturday night.
