Terrazas' PK Stands Up In Men's Soccer's 1-0 Shutout Win Over Holy Cross (Ind.)

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Alex Terrazas converted a penalty kick into the game's only goal in the 27th minute, and the Roosevelt men's soccer team used defense to do the rest of the work in a 1-0 victory over visiting Holy Cross (Ind.) at Toyota Park on Wednesday.

Jesus Velasco made four saves for his third clean sheet of the season, organizing a strong team defensive effort along with Luis Ortiz, Hector Luna and a host of others for the Lakers (4-3-1, 1-1-0 CCAC), who picked up their first league win of the year and snapped a three-game skid.

Rain came down steadily throughout warmups, but shortly after introductions the precipitation dissipated and clouds made way for competitiveness.

The deciding factor occurred in the 27th minute, when the Saints (3-4-1, 0-2-0 CCAC) were whistled for a takedown in the box and the referee awarded the hosts a penalty kick.

Playing without All-American Evan Trychta due to injury, the Lakers relied on Terrazas to take a PK for the second straight match, and just like his last attempt, the senior confidently converted the try into a score for what proved to be the game-winning tally.

Velasco and the defensive energy of Graham Brennan's Roosevelt side snuffed out dangerous Holy Cross pushes and threatening balls sent into the box throughout the second half in order to preserve the lead and, eventually, victory.

Newcomers Sergio Fuentes and Frank Estrada made their home debuts, as did new Roosevelt kits that looked sharper sans the dreary overcast skies that departed as the game began.

Roosevelt hosts Trinity Christian (Ill.) this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Toyota Park.
