Volleyball Splits Two On Final Day Of Julie Martin Classic; Owusu Named To All-Tournament Team

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Roosevelt volleyball team completed its stay at the 2013 Julie Martin Memorial Classic hosted by 11th-ranked Madonna on Saturday, sweeping Rochester and falling in three to Davenport at Madonna's Activities Center.

Roosevelt (7-3) defeated the Warriors (10-10) 25-16, 25-18, 25-19, giving the Lakers their second sweep of Rochester this season, before capping the day in a tough loss to the Grand Rapids-based Panthers (8-5) 25-19, 25-10, 25-11.

Junior Vanessa Owusu was named to the 2013 Julie Martin Memorial Classic All-Tournament Team after tallying 27 kills (2.08 kills per set), a .163 attack percentage, four blocks, and nine digs during the Lakers' four-match showing.

In Saturday's opener against Rochester, Owusu led the charge with a match-best 10 kills in three sets, hitting at a clip of .467, to pace an efficient Laker attack. Roosevelt posted an attack percentage of .211 as a team and forced Rochester into committing 22 errors in 86 attack attempts.

Valerie Cutrone had nine kills, Tori Schrementi posted seven kills and Marissa Minturn handed out 16 assists. Emily Bejma had 11 helpers of her own.

Arielle Nausieda continued her defensive mastery with 10 digs in the three-set opener. She finished the event with 48 digs in four matches.

It was different story against Davenport, as the quick turnaround against a tough side caused Roosevelt to hit at a clip of -.020, compared to the Panthers' percentage of .395. Davenport committed just eight errors, and after a tight first set, the final two frames saw big Panther runs clinch the victory for the in-state school.

Roosevelt heads into CCAC play with the conference opener at Robert Morris in Arlington Heights this Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
