LIVONIA, Mich. - The Roosevelt volleyball team suffered a four-set defeat at the hands of Westminster, 25-18, 20-25, 25-12, 25-7, in the Lakers' second match of the Julie Martin Memorial Classic hosted by Madonna University on Friday evening.
Marissa Minturn had 22 assists and Arielle Nausieda posted 20 digs for the Lakers (6-2).
Valerie Cutrone and Vanessa Owusu had seven kills apiece.
Alexia Alona paced the Griffins (4-6) with a match-best nine kills.
Westminster opened the match with a 25-18 victory, leading that set most of the way. Roosevelt responded with a 13-3 run in the second set that turned a one-point deficit into a big lead, and the Lakers held on for a 25-20 second-set win clinched by an Owusu kill to deadlock the contest.
The next two sets didn't prove to be as kind to the Green and White, as the Griffins built up large advantages in the third and decisive fourth sets to take the match.
Roosevelt hit at a clip of just .023, compared to Westminster's .220 attack percentage.
The Lakers return to action at Madonna's Activities Center on Saturday with two more matches at the Julie Martin Memorial Classic. Roosevelt faces Rochester at 10:30 a.m. Central in a rematch of the two teams' Roosevelt Tournament contest on Aug. 24 that saw the Lakers sweep the Warriors. That is followed by a clash between Roosevelt and Davenport at 12:30 p.m. Central to close out the event.
