Chicago, Ill. – The Roosevelt volleyball team rallied back for a five-set victory over visiting Trinity International, 25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10 on Thursday night at the UIC Physical Education Building.
Sophomore Vanessa Owusu and freshman Tori Schrementi paced the Lakers (4-4, 1-1) attack. Owusu led Roosevelt with a personal-best 16 kills, while adding six blocks and three service aces. Schrementi continued her strong rookie season with a career-high 14 kills behind an efficient .444 attack percentage. She also collected four blocks in the win.
Libero Arielle Nausieda totaled 14 digs to lead the Lakers defensive effort. Emma Jarvis also reached double digits in digs with 10.
Rebecca Campbell and Samantha Stoller each had 13 kills to lead Trinity International (1-10, 0-2).
Trailing 2-1 in the match, Roosevelt used a critical 6-1 run during the fourth set to turn a slim 13-10 lead into a 19-11 advantage. The Lakers rode that momentum to a 25-19 triumph, sending the match to a deciding fifth set. The two sides traded the lead early in the final set. Roosevelt owned a slim 10-9 lead when head coach Kelly Fitzgerald's crew pulled away, scoring five of the next six points to close out the match.
Roosevelt's four wins this season is one shy of its five-win total from all of last season. The Lakers will look to reach and surpass that mark on Friday when they open play in the Jim Coleman Memorial Tournament by taking on the host Aurora University Spartans at 2:00 p.m. Roosevelt will play four matches in the two-day event, including a showdown with Beloit on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
