Lakers Stumble Against Grand Valley State At Home

BENSENVILLE, Ill. – The Roosevelt University ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team was swept at home by Grand Valley State on Friday and Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena. The Lakers lost to the visitors 13-1 in Friday's game then battled to a 6-2 defeat Saturday to drop their record to 2-4 overall.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 13, ROOSEVELT 1 – FRIDAY 10/28

The visiting Lakers from Grand Valley State came out strong in the first period, outshooting the hosts 16-6 and scoring five times in the frame. Grand Valley State scored less than two minutes into the game then scored three times in five minutes to assume control.

Roosevelt found itself in some penalty trouble in the second period while trying to chase the game, but managed to kill off all three minors in the period. However, the Lakers managed just five shots on goal, equaling the number of goals Grand Valley State padded to its lead on 26 shots.

Finally in the third period, Quinn Haller added a shorthanded tally to put the hosts on the board as Roosevelt was able to nearly double its shot on goal with 10 in the frame. However, Grand Valley State also scored three times on 18 shots to skate away with the victory.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 6, ROOSEVELT 2 – SATURDAY 10/29

Roosevelt was again outplayed in the first period Saturday night, but this time it managed to reach the first intermission scoreless. Josh Brown stopped all 13 shots he faced in the opening 20 minutes while the Lakers managed just two shots on goal in front of him.

The floodgates opened a little more than a minute into the second period as Grand Valley State cashed in on an early chance. The Lakers were outshot 17-7 in the second stanza and trailed 4-0 after 40 minutes were played.

Senior captain Frank Moore gave the home fans some hope when he scored 43 seconds into the third period.      Cade Swygert scored in the middle of the third period as well for the Lakers, but both goals were cancelled out by Grand Valley State goals at the other end for the 6-2 final.

Brown stopped 39 of the 45 shots he faced in the game to bring his total from the weekend to 54 saves on 63 shots faced. The Lakers scored three goals on 39 shots in the two games, including twice on 18 attempts in Saturday's contest.
